Is the seal where the pickup tube bolts to the block merely a 3/4" "O" ring? Anything special about it? I'd prefer to just buy an generic  "O" ring rather than a $5.00 one  in a fancy parts envelope.
Thanks, Bob

What Dipstick are you referring to?   3/4" seems to be rather large for such a narrow tube.

Bruce,
It's the oil pickup tube with the screen attached that bolts to the front of the block for the oil supply.
Attaches with 2 bolts.

Bob,
As long as the seal is;1. the proper diameter and thickness, 2. Is compatible with engine oil, and 3. is servicable at engine temperatures, there should be no problem using it.  The O'ring package is usually package d with an engine set or an oil pan set, and there are two diameters. One for the early blocks and one for the later ones.  As long as you have the old o'ring for measurements, you can go from there.

Greg,
Good advise. I looked at a kit at Rockauto. It looks like there may be one in it. My gasket set comes in tomorrow so we'll see.
Thanks, Bob

Oops, there I go again.   Still thinking about your Dipstick.

Yes, any "O" Ring will do, but the thicker the ring, the more chance you have of bending the two attaching flanges.

Plus, if you are doing the Timing Set at the same time, make sure you use the correct length bolts in the Cam Gear, that is the ones with the star-spring washers.   Use the Oil Pump Pickup bolts in the Cam Gear, and you WILL be pulling the engine again.
