1941 Cadillac Power Steering Installion
« on: January 13, 2018, 12:53:12 PM »
My friend would like to know if there is anyone in New England who would know how to install a power steering unit in his beautiful 1941 Cadillac; very tough steering so much so his dear wife can't turn the wheel.  Let me know and I'll give him the info.  THANKS!   EAM

Ev,
Hi. The steering is a little tough. What kind of tires are on the car now? The steering also gets tough when the steering box hasn't been attended to and starts to bind up. There are aftermarket kits out there, but they aren't cheap and you need someone who wants to tackle it. It takes a little bit of improvising and knowing your way around the Cadillac engine bay. I was going to do mine, but just by keeping the tires inflated to the proper pressure AND Rebuilding the original box (which was shot and in need of it), really made a big difference. You can call or PM me if you'd like to discuss. Hope this helps!

Very often the pitman shaft seal leaks, draining or dripping all the lubricant out.  Then as the gearbox is used without lube, the bushings get worn or galled.  The pitman arm connection to the tie rod link can be gummed up with ancient grease.  Somehow these parts are forgotten as the steering slowly degrades that diagnosis is not considered.
