Hi All,
Can anyone explain what this is on the firewall of my 56 ser 6237 next to the heater control valve. Thanks Dan

Cadman-iac

Dan,
Whatever that is, it's not stock. There shouldn't be any kind of a knob there. And that harness loom tell me that someone has been making modifications. That split wire loom wasn't used until the late 70's .
Have you looked at the other side of the firewall to see what the knob is connected to?

I have a Corvette race car that had a remote starter through the firewall like that.  So, either someone wanted to have a control handy for engine tuning or they were bypassing/forcing a system to work.  Be suspect of the work.  Best to get under the dash and carpet and track down what the wiring is doing and the quality of the wiring.  I usually end up removing wiring modifications and returning harnesses to OEM specs as much as possible.  Faulty wiring is a great way to lose a car to fire.

Dan,
Now that I see a bigger picture I wonder if that is supposed to be some kind of heater water control?

I'm curious to find out what is connected to the other side.    Seems really strange that someone would mount some sort of control like that.   What would be inside the car that you would want to control from under the hood.   Same with the other way.  If it was something like a remote start why would you mount it there?  It would seem easier to mount it totally in the engine compartment.    Same question if its some sort of security kill switch, why have it part in and part out?

I wonder; it looks like a connection/access point to attach a garden hose for reverse flushing of the cooling system?  Unscrew the cap and screw on a garden hose?

It does, sort of.  But the only problem with this is that there are no hoses on the inside of the car, and the heater valve doesn't extend inside except for the control portion of it.
It almost looks like an old wiper knob off of some newer vehicle that used plastic, like an imported car.

I wonder if its not something someone stuck in a hole that was there?.I hope we find out soon, the suspense is unbearable. :P Harveyb

LOL.  We should start a poll!

I'm thinking that harvey b might be right.  Just something stuck in a hole . . . .

Conversation starter knob.
"Hey, what's that?"
I think JC Whitney sold them...back in the day.   Like those half baseballs that stick on the window to look broken of today.
Probably a muffler bearing adjustment knob.   Dinger pins and radiator linkages were non-adjustable in '56.

Who thinks it may go to 11?

Looking at the photo again I think I may join team Harvey.   It does have the look of a grommeted hole that used to have something passing through it and when that something was removed what we see now was just something that was handy.

I just looked at mine and the only thing that is correct about this picture is the clip for the wire harness just above the knob. Where the knob is it's supposed to be blank metal.
Just waiting to hear what's behind the knob like everyone else now.
I'm sticking with my original guess,  a wiper knob/switch.

It's the blinker fluid fill port. Always keep it topped off.

Really?  You are recommending synthetic blinker fluid for a 56?  If I can't get blinker fluid with Azodicarbonamide I just won't use any at all.

Upon a closer look maybe that fluid would be OK for a 56, the oz to ml conversion is correct and it is the id1ot formula.

Yes, the new synthetic blend is backward compatible.

Maybe its a portal to an alternate universe and when Dan touched it he was transported away and that's why we don't know what its hooked to yet?

Only way it could be more exciting is if it was labeled 'do not touch'.
