I own a 47 Cad 62 Club Cpe.Installing some led bulbs at the taillight positions. While testing the lights I have noticed the following. The upper bulb is a taillight and stop light. The bottom bulb is a turn signal only. The bottom bulb is a duel filament that only operates the t/signal. Is the bottom bulb supposed to be wired for something else, such as another taillight?

Jeff Hansen

Dick,

No, the bottom bulb socket only functions as a turn signal from the factory even though it has a dual-filament 1154 bulb.  You could certainly wire up the other filament for additional brightness on your tail lights.

I to had that question about my 46. In the end I wired the lower bulb to be both tail and turn signal as the 46&7 tail lights are not that visible to begin with . I feel it was a good move as the lower part of the light faces more to the rear of the car then the upper half. Chrome tape to the inside of the buckets helped a lot as well. Tim

Correction! I wired the lower half to be turn and Brake lights ,sort of like having a third brake light. The brighter filament is turn and the other brake.

Hello,
I own a 1946 '61 Club Coupe and have overheard your conversation.
What do you suggest, or maybe you have already done that with the lenses in the taillights? Over the years these parts have faded and the bright yellow has darkened.
I still have the 6V system and the weak incandescent light barely comes through the lenses and red glass of the taillights.

Oliver,

Make sure you are getting good voltage at the socket and make sure the sockets are properly grounded. You should have good, rust-free, metal-to-metal connections for grounding.

Hi Oliver, Tim here. I took my tail light assembly's completely apart. I scrubbed the plastic refractors with a stiff toothbrush and fine polishing compound. Then cleaned up and painted all the metal except the inside of the sockets bright white. After that I rewired and assembled with good 12 gauge wire. We can get chrome tape over here in our auto parts stores and I have since put that inside my tail lights behind the bulbs. It helped a bit more then the white but the best thing I did was to turn the unused dim filament in the lower bulb into a third brake light . My tail lights are very bright compared to what they were originally. Take care and good to hear from you, Tim

Thanks Jeff and thanks Tim,
I will follow your recommendations and hope I will get comparable results.
