1951 cadillac ballast resistor

I realize 1951 did not come with one but do they need a ballast resistor on the coil? Would it help? They added them in 53.

Ballast resistor added in 1953 because that is when Cadillac went to 12 volts.  Don't know that your car would run at all with a ballast resistor.  Some '30s Fords (don't ask me what years) ran with B.R.'s but once they went with separate coils they no longer used them.
