I began the tear down of the tired HT4100 that is to be rebuilt, converted to a 4.5 and installed in my 85 Eldo. I hope this link works for those who wish to view the pics. You will see that the internals are pretty gummed up and the cam is about the worse I have ever seen.

Stay tuned, I will be keeping a photo documentary of the whole process.

Good luck, I do not know what changes you need to make to make it a 4.5, but it should be a great experience.

By the way, make sure your intake manifold bolt heads have a spring washer under them.  If not go to Cadillac and buy the kit.  Originally, the movement caused the bolts to loosen and there goes your water where you do not want it.  Also the kit gives you new torque values as well as a tap to add more threads at the bottom of the holes.  Evidently some bolts tightened at the end of the threads without torquing the intake manifold correctly.

I have a bit of an uphill battle on this engine. I plan on purchasing a 4.5 from an 88 or 89 deVille/Fleetwood and robbing the cylinder liner/piston assemblies from it. That will be the physical part of the 4.5 conversion.

The cam replacement will be a stock GM unit. The oil pump that came out of another GM rebuild is sound, but I may consider replacing it with a higher qulaity unit as a precautionary measure. These are a scource of problems on these engines also.

I already have the updated GM intake set with the spring loaded washers and tap. That is a must when replacing the intake gaskets. Also, the gasket material is upgraded from the original hard composition. I also have the latest design GM head gaskets.

I will also be hogging out the convertor and getting rid of the AIR if only for reason of convenience. It is a very difficult system to work around. The AIR pump will be retained simply as an idler for the belt system. These, with some other tuning measures, should yield a decently powerful and driveable car with decent fuel economy. No hot rod, but enough power as not to be embarrassed.

I am no stranger to these engines. I have torn down and repaired what seems like dozens of them, from the HT4100 to the 4.9 in the years I was working at the dealer. They no longer intimidate me!

Mike,

Why not replace the AIR pump with a mini supercharger?

Well, if I can under drive it and put on a planetary set to increase the speed, I may be able to use the air pump as the supercharger. I can feed the hose into the air cleaner, and voila! Unbounded extra power!

Think the HT4100 could handle it?

I tore the engine down further yesterday. All is out except for the crank and the piston/liner assemblies. Now you can see the unique assembly of this engine.
