Eric, that is a great point about the rain. My personal opinion is that for a big meet the lawn show adds a little class to the event. A huge asphalt site reminds me of any other show that happens every week at the local mall  and the grass and or lake view is more enjoyable to me than just sitting in a big parking lot.
