Is there anyway to remove the transmission with out removing the engine?

Yes. Have a look into the shop manual for the description how to do it. (If you don't have it, you should search for one).
Don't forget to support the rear of the engine; without the transmission, it will tilt towards the firewall and the distributor will contact it.
