55 Power steering gearbox lube

What is the capacity of gear lube for a 55 Cadillac power steering gearbox?

I believe the whole unit utilized type A automatic transmission fluid ?

The 1955 unit was a "hybrid" unit that had two sides, a hydraulic side that used ATF and a separate gear box that used a lubricating oil.

The fluid Cadillac called GM-4673M was used to lubricate
the gear box was the same as 80-90W (or straight 90) oil.  There is no noted capacity for this unit in the literature.  The only advice for refill is to fill to the top of the filler plug opening.

I recently refilled my gearbox in my 54 with gear oil and it slowly leaked out everywhere. So I've heard many people simply just injecting wheel bearing grease until it fills up the plug.

This is exactly what I did because my gearbox was bone dry. And the steering feels even smoother now.

Eventually it will need to be rebuilt with new seals to prevent leaks but for now I'm ok with how it feels.

I used Penrite steering box lube suggested by Jay Friedman on both my 41 and 49. It works very well with no more seepage.

Bob, I cleaned out as much old lube as I could. Then filled with the Penrite. I see a bottle on Ebay for about $17. It's called Penrite Semi Fluid Steering Box Lube.

Mine leaked out of the Pitman shaft seal. Simple inexpensive repair and hasn't leaked in 11 years.  Terry

Where are you guys getting the Penrite ?

I see it on eBay for $17 but shipping from Australia is $60 plus per bottle back to the states.

There was a heated discussion on another forum about whether Tractor Supply's "Super S Cotton Picker Spindle Grease 00" was just as good as the Penrite.

Got my Penrite gear lube from Restoration Stuff on December 19 2022 ordered on December 14 2022. The lube/grease was $21.00 for 500 grams I purchased two the shipping was $14.21 from California to Janesville Wisconsin. Now to figure out how to get it in the fill hole any ideas?
