I've been recommended Valvoline VR1 // 20W50 non-synthetic oil for my 429.  This is aok? The former owner had been putting 10W30 in it....

GM recommended 30W for the 429.  You can get the VR1 in 10W30.  The thicker oil could be beneficial if you are running the car hard (like racing) or if you have an oil consumption problem.

If you are experiencing low oil pressure problems because of the 429's "Achilles heel" oil pump, a heavier oil will help that and put off the inevitable and increasingly difficult search for another, lesser worn pump.  20W-50, 20W-40 won't hurt a thing.
