Hello

I own a 55 Coupe Deville. Thanks to a shoddy rebuild, my 331 may now be completely toast. I have someone with a rebuilt 58 motor that I am considering swapping to. I believe this should be a 1 to 1 swap, but am not 100% sure. Anything I need to know about this that could potentially be problematic or will the 58 motor mount up ok to the original 55 trans? Any suggestions welcome. Thanks

John

In my opinion, it's a no go. The 1955 car has the first Hydramatic generation; the 58 engine has the 1956-63 generation. I'm afraid you will have difficulties to mate the '55 transmission to the '58 engine.

I did this project once and the 55-transmission housing will fit the 58 motor.  the 55 transmission has a bearing in the crank shaft and this must be put in the 58.  I had to make a bushing to fit it in there, and cut a slight amount off the 55 transmission input shaft, and everything worked fine. make sure to use the 55 starter
