Yesterday I looked at a 1970 CDV. On the firewall was a glass jar which looked like it was full of Marvel Mystery Oil. There was a line to the carburetor. Is this some type of upper end lubrication add on? I tried  unsuccessful searches to find out what this is.

I take possession of the car this week. I will post a photo once it's in my garage. I'm sure I will have questions as I explore this car.

I found the attachment is a Ampco Vapor Lubricator. It's the glass jar with the yellow and red label on the firewall. The literature says it does wonderful things. It has a line that goes into the carb and looks to be full of MMO.

Believe it or not you can still buy these:  http://www.ampcolubes.com/

A lot of people add Marvel Mystery Oil to gas for upper cylinder lubrication especially in older vehicles.  Not going to get into the argument about whether you should or should not, but there are lots of discussions online if you are interested.

I have always added 4oz of MMO to every 10 gallons of gas. Maybe it helps, maybe it doesn't but I see no harm in it.

When I worked in a garage in the 60's I used to see these
from time to time.  The usual product in the jar was
Marvel Mystery Oil.  It was thought, as already mentioned,
that it provided upper cylinder lubrication.  I'm surprised
that these kits are still available as one poster mentioned.

there are a few interesting items on the silver car

Big Fins

The under hood of that car looks almost completely original, sans the A/C compressor. Factory radiator hoses, heater hoses, R-12 refrigerant, unless the supply ports were left original. Must be a nice low mileage car.  8)
