Here we go again re' 472/500 engine serial numbers.  I know I found the answer before, but I can't seem to find it now.  I'm talking about the serial number stamped on the drivers side of the rear of the block just behind the intake.  I know the numbers are VERY hard to read, but they actually tell you the year of manufacture somewhere in their sequence.  Does anyone have this info handy.
Thanks

For my '70, I only recall the car's VIN being stamped on the pad.

I don't know if this will help but here's some info:

An original engine will have a matching VIN number on it.

I  no longer have the car or the book; but I know for sure that the '73 shop manual explains it near the front of the book where the codes / model info is.  The model # (3EL67...?????? or whatever it was) is part of the sequence. I needed to do that to verify that the engine originated in an Eldorado (500 ci) vs Deville etc (472 ci) for a customer. I'm guessing other years manuals explain this too, but I know it was in the '73 book.  That number is stamped on a rough unfinished casting. Cleaning the area and the rubbing a yellow or white crayon on it, and re-wiping helps bring it out.    Joe Gibeault

I think you just knocked some of the rust out of my brain. The VIN number of course will give me the year

Was it the whole VIN number?    I was thinking it was just the last few digits but its been about 20 years since I thought about it.   And as mentioned even under ideal conditions they can be hard to read.   Out of the dozen or so I have got a good look at including out of the car clean engines I don't think I ever saw one where I was 100% sure of every digit.

That is the absolutely clearest stamping I have seen.  How much of it complies with the car's vin number?

You guys must have got those Wednesday cars Johnny Cash talked about.  The guy with the stamp was in the groove hitting them all straight and hard mid week but not so much Monday and Friday.

The 6 says it’s Cadillac and the 2 says 1972. A is the factory. Now by the time I need to date a block I’ll probably forget the “code”
So thanks everyone.

Yes Greg, I was aware of that.   The car was built, I think, in October '71.
