Title: 1942 Research question
Post by: Jeff Hansen on August 29, 2009, 12:15:56 PM
Does anyone have copies of the 1942 and 1946 Master Chassis Parts books (or any issued during the war) that could look up some parts for me?  I'm trying to determine/verify the finish and availability of particular parts of the 1942 grill assembly.

If you can help, please reply to me privately by clicking the 'email' link to the left of this message.

Thanks in advance,
Jeff

I tried the link ,but got an error message.  I do have a reprint of the 42 chassis (9 th edition) and  a factory print of the 46 chassis (10 th edition) book.  Just post what you need here as I seldom read my emails. Besides I'm sure there are more that me that would like to know about the war models. Warren

Hi Warren,

I'm looking specifically for information from Groups 6.1318 "Fin, Radiator Grille" and 6.1253 "Grille, Radiator".

For group 6.1318, I'm looking to see how the vertical grill bars were available from the factory.  Were they available painted argent?  Were they available plated?

For 6.1253, was the entire grill available plated?  Or was it available painted (for blackout cars)?  Or was it available plated with painted vertical bars?

If you can supply a scan of the pages, that would be preferred. Otherwise, I'll need part numbers, descriptions, any specifications listed, etc. just as it is listed in the manual.

Also, what is the date of each manual (listed on the title page)?

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks!
Jeff

The parts books I checked  chassis ed.9 March 25,1942 and ed 10 July 15,1946. Also Body ed 7 Oct 15,1940 and ed 10 ,May 5,1948  . The body books were of no help ,the 1946 chassis of almost no help. The 1942 chassis is a gold mine.

   group 6.1253 Radiator Grille
    103 7399 Chromium 1942 A
    109 7469 Gunmetal gray enamel  1942 B
  group 6.1318 Fin Radiator Grille
     Horizontial
     1942A chromium
     1942B Gunmetal Gray Enamel
   Vertical
There are three groups 1942 A  before serial numbers below were Chromium
      60s 6380030
      61  5383162
      62  8380580
      63  7380827
      67  9380152
      75  3380466
Next group   1942 A  were painted Argent  starting with above numbers thru to the start of 1942 B models.
1942 B models start with numbers below see Serviceman 1942 pg 2
     60s 6386001
     61  5386001
     62  8386001
     63  7386001
     67 9386001
     75  3386001
Then the last group 1942 B starting with the above numbers were gunmetal gray enamel
There is a small mention in the Cadillac Serviceman (Jan-Feb 1942 pg2)  It says that all chrome parts except bumpers and guards will be replaced with painted parts for the new series 1942B cars. Here is a listing of some of them.

group 6.0794 Goddess 1447385 Gold Bronze Finish

group 10.0082Cover aux light opening 3507449/50 Gunmetal Gray enamel

group 10.0705 Louver on rear fender or cap number varys by series finish "in Primer"

  group10.1250 Moulding outer running board 1447373 42B-75 exc 160wb, 1447374 160 wb

group 10.1252 End cap running board  1447372 42B-75

group 13.0033 Hood Letters 1447613 to 16  Chrome Gray enamel

group 13.0038  Hood center strip   "in primer"

group 22.0580  Wheel Disc  3507447 1942B -67,75 Gunmetal Gray Enamel
no listing other tan chrome for any other series

I tried the body books I have for door handels, trunk chrome, etc. no listings for "blackout" parts.Since they were not all listed in the 46 book , you will probably need a 1942 book to find them.
I am a guest on this forum and not allowed to post scans. But will mail you some. Warren
