Yeah, it could be useful if you visit Atlanta, Wash DC, Baltimore, LA, New Orleans..... :P

Now to answer Trevor's question, I'd suggest the Henry Ford Museum & Chrysler Museum.

Now, I never had a problem when we took the wrong turn into a "darker" neighbourhood in in Detroit in 2002, whilst driving to a BBQ in Southfield.
Even stopped and asked for directions as we were totally lost, and driving a Californian Registered darkened windows '89 Thunderbird.
The people we spoke to were very kind, and obliging, especially when they heard my supposed accent. Maybe they had seen Crocodile Dundee? Could have stayed there longer, but had a party to attend, and some lovely flavoured Popcorn was consumed at same party.
Bruce. >:D
thanks for the replies so far everywhere we have been has been great i hope my australian optimisim wont get me into trouble
Hi Trevor
The Detroit area is not that bad, so you should be fine. "The Henry Ford" is great stop and a walk on the riverfront by the Renaissance Center is nice as well downtown. The Ren Cen is GM's headquarters so you can walk through the lobby there and there used to be some cars on display.
I sent you a note offline as well, so feel free to call when you are here.
David

Like any city; there are some not-so-desirable areas. Stay out of them and you shouldn't have trouble.
FWIW, after the 2002 GN, the Motor City Region received a Thank You note from a fellow Aussie. In it he stated unequivocally that:
"Detroit was his best vacation ever'. It was filed in an album with the other dozens of notes and well wishes from participants.
