Title: Looking for exhaust heat deflectors for a 1958 Cadillac Series 62
Post by: johnregrus on May 21, 2013, 11:47:54 PM
I noticed in a picture of the exhaust system in the 57/58 shop Manuel. It appears that there are flat pieces of metal with round clamps and attached to each exhaust pipe just ahead of the resonators one on each side. I assume these are heat deflectors.

Does anyone make and sell these anymore?

Thanks John

They are not heat deflectors; but rather, mud/water deflectors and provide a "finished" look when viewing the car looking behind the rear tires.  Not sure if anyone makes replacement ones, but a junk yarde or parting out car should have them.

Jon is correct.  They bolt to the inner fender and hide the resonators and add some support to the lower fenders.  '57 and '58 should be the same on all cars except maybe the Eldorados.

Hi John,I do know what you are talking about only 1958 Cadillac had these fitted they are not the Splash Guards that Walter & Jon are talking about, both 57 & 58 had these fitted. In a detailed diagram I have of the exhaust system of a 58 it does clearly show these the only reference I have is 9.0011 .
These are not shown in the exhaust diagram of the 57. The splash guards for 57 & 58 are in the body section not the exhaust section.
My low milage 58 did not have these fitted maybe they were a part that was removed anyone else out there with an old parts book or a early original  58
that maybe able to enlighten us, as I make new exhaust hanger brackets I would like to know myself.

Walter -

They actually bolt directly on the rear tail pipe forward of the resonators and provide no structural support whatsoever.  They are purely cosmetic.

I'd really like a photo of the parts in question.

Walter -

Next time I get the car out of storage, I'll take some pics.  As you know, my dad bought the Sedan De Ville brand new and it is 99.99% original.  These were deflectors and are purely cosmetic parts.  Most exhaust shops threw them away . . . my dad told them to re-install them.

I attached a pic where you can see the "finished" look behind the rear tire - no see through, but a black deflector to maintain the contour of the wheel opening.  Will post close-ups when I get the car out.

My 1958 has been in the family since 8/1958 and I know they are splash guards/stone deflectors to protect and hide the resonators.  All of the parts on my car are as installed at the factory and the car is 99.99% original.

This does make sense as there was a drastic change in the rear section of the '58 frame, suspension and exhaust system.

Attached A diagram of the part in question that only 58's had , its not to be confused with the splash guards that both 57 & 58 had.

e resonators and is cosmey

Grant -

That is precisely the part I am referring to.  It is attached to the tailpipe and serves as a spash/stone guard for the resonators.
