Post by: Bill Balkie 24172 on October 09, 2015, 08:10:51 PM
Hello,
There is a very interesting 1933  Cadillac  on Ebay just a few miles from my Mount Laurel home . This car has been in the same Family for years and has a very interesting history . I know nothing about  the car or the people that own it . Someone made  me aware of it so I thought I would share  the Find . I have added a link

    Have fun ,
        Bill

Bill,
WOW! Thanks for the history lesson involving this magnificent automobile! We definitely have some interesting cars hiding out here in NJ  ;)…..That's a once in a lifetime chance for a rare car, but would the restoration costs exceed the value, even if you performed a good percentage of the work yourself? Most of the vehicles at Pebble Beach are way over the top and require deep pockets to get them that way. What really surprises me is that the car is actually on eBay. I would've thought that it would have traded hands behind closed doors given it's provenance. Nevertheless, a beautiful piece of machinery and history. I hope it doesn't wind up overseas…..

The Car in the archival photo shown has a light colored interior not black.

Bill,
The car in the archival picture is a 32 as he states. The 33 had a cloth interior. The color of one fabric & the pattern of another.
That's the kind of thing that could be done at that time.

Firstly, if this is a #4, #5 car I am in a heap of trouble with my '37! What comes after #5????

Secondly, considering the car's future raises a lot of questions:

1.    Is it still close enough to original to leave it as it is or has too much been done to it already to make it less valuable as a rare "survivor"?

2.    If you start a reasonable restoration on it, is it "gone" so far that it will cost a "bomb" anyway so you might as well do a full restoration on it?

3.    If you are happy to invest "full restoration" money in it will it be enough to recoup its cost, especially given where the bids are at right now ($73,000 as we speak)?

4.    If you did spend "Pebble Beach" money on it, would the car ever be really rare enough to make it to Pebble Beach anyway?

Beautiful car and it has to be kept. Just glad I won't have to front the dilemma of answering these questions!

John,
After #5 it's called a "Driver", and that's probably what 75% of us on this site own!  ::)

Guys,
That car got a crappy amateur "restoration at the  time. They destroyed every bit of original detail.  Then it got stored in a dirt floor garage to "age" it. It needs everything including the incorrect back glass. If I owned it, the first thing I would do is remove those butt ugly Trippe lights & throw them in the trash. I can only imagine how the wood is. Yeah... it is a rare car.

Bob, how very well said, I'll second this all the way, how much more authentic the car would have been today,  had it been left untouched and stored. It is a sad car,  as it is now. Johan

In the case of my Car. A little powder and a little paint makes it look like what it ain't.

Definitely will need a lot of work to bring it back to a show car - which is where this car should be today. Full restoration with remanufactured parts to replace incorrect items, it will cost someone quite a bit of time and money.

Sad that it was stored the way it was but it is a rare and special v12 . Bob, you seem to be familiar with cars from this period what do you think the car would be worth fully restored ?  Thanks

Ray,
I owned many of those 32/33 cars. I'm always willing to share my knowledge. I have no idea of present market values.

Back in the sixties, when I was a teenager in Camden NJ, I remember seeing this car and another one like it that was a V-8. The seller confirms that this is one on the cars that belonged to Mr. Ackley, who owned a bakery in Camden. He kept these cars in a fenced in yard behind the bakery. He also had an early thirties V-8 convertible coupe in blue and several 1938-1940 sedans. The sedans were kind of seedy looking. As I recall, all of the cars were kept outdoors, although several of them were in some kind of carport.

At one point he offered me a running 1938 60 Special for $250.00. That was considered a lot of money and people told me that I was very foolish for considering it.

I have always wondered what happened to those cars.
