Title: 1956 Cadillac Gold wheels
Post by: Marriedterri on August 20, 2016, 10:27:16 AM
I have a set of wheels which were taken off a 1956 Cadillac years ago and stored in a barn. Number 39796 on each. Any ideas what these are worth these days? Any information is much appreciated.

I can't believe I stumbled across this.   Those are the Gold anodized Sabre wheels that are so prized by Cadillac collectors.   I don't know what they are really worth, only that they are worth A LOT.   So don't get cheated.
1956 model year:
Kelsey Hayes 39786 â€" 39787 â€" 39796 “clad rim” design. (wheel manufacturing process modified)
2 VERSIONS: Chrome (Cadillac Part Number 146 3918 AND Gold (Cadillac Part Number 146 5348).

I want them.

They can be worth a lot but they cost a lot to restore. So ones that are not perfect usually aren't that expensive because it's costs $1k a wheel to refurb. My friend got some silver Sabres for $200.

I agree with Alex. If they are driver quality, they can be reasonable say in the $100 to $200 per wheel, range, if you are patient. That low price reflects the high cost of restoring them. Can't tell how good these ones are due to image quality of photos. Having the hub cap centres may help if they are not badly dented. Got an extra set here that I would part with, but they need restoration as well. Clay/Lexi

These were offered ONLY for 1956.  Finding a full set of 5 is rare.  They look great.

I gotta wonder how they would look on my 1957-60-Special instead of hubcaps? Would it be appropriate?

First of all, they won't fit the front brake drums without a spacer.

Several suggestions. Remove those junk tires. Home depot sells heavy duty boxes. Offer to pack those wheels & then ship at the carrier the customer chooses. Customer pays shipping off course.

Hi Bob
Appreciate the great ideas.
I'm hesitant to have just any tire shop remove the tires because I don't want to risk them damaging the wheels. Figured the tires would offer some protection with transport anyway.
Thanks again
Tom
