Title: 1939 Lasalle series 50 stearing column
Post by: fbouchal on March 01, 2019, 04:51:59 PM
Hi,
I am missing some parts on my Lasalle but I don't know what I am looking for.  Does anyone have a diagram of the column.  I have enclosed a picture of my column to show what I have.  Any help is greatly appreciated.  Thanks Frank

I don't see anything missing there. There weren't any indicators in the column until 1940 so it looks the same as 38 in there.  Why do you think somethings missing?

Sounds like you have the same problem I had when I first got mine.  In your engine compartment where the steering column comes through the firewall there are two curved arms on the column. Those attach to the "Shifter Connecting Arms".  One controls the 1st and Reverse gears and if it's in the wrong position you can't move the lever on the steering wheel. Just stick your hand in there and move it up or down to the correct position and you should be okay. I freaked out when it first happened to me because I had mine parked in gear and couldn't even crank the engine. Apparently, I had knocked it out of position while I was fooling around under the hood the day before. I was scared I had seized the engine up as it was bitterly cold out and I hadn't checked the antifreeze yet  ;D

Thanks for the replys.  I found the issue.  The brass collar wasnt all the way in the shadt so the lever wasnt seated down all the way.    I just got the car and am finding lots of little issues. 🤔

wont drop down much, maybe 1/2 inch if lucky, the steerting colum is part of the steering box,it sticks straight up.Had same issue on my 37,just use lots of tape and paper. Harveyb

Harvey is correct, not much play in there. I had my dash out when I painted mine so it was a lot easier to access.
