Title: 1960 oil dip stick identification
Post by: oregonjam on March 22, 2019, 07:59:11 PM
Hello,

I have two oil dip sticks for my 1960 390. The blue one was installed and has a 6” handle, and a twist 2/3s down that I’m not sure should be there.  The shorter handled one was in the trunk, measures from the cap to tip is about 1” longer, has a 3” handle and is straight with no twist.

Adding; blue one is 22 1/8” long from under cap to tip.
Short handle one is 23 1/8” long from under cap to tip.

Are either of these correct? Are more dimensions needed to identify them?

Cheers,
John

Somebody may beat me to it, but if not, I can measure mine on Monday.

Hello John,

The left ( blue ) dipstick in your pictures is the correct one. This dipstick is for 1959 & 1960 390 engines. Part # is: 1471857 according to the CMP.
I took some pictures and measurements of my 1959 Fleetwood to compare.

Matern,

Thank you very much. The images you share show the dip stick laying perfectly flat on the table. Mine has a twist that requires me to turn the dip stick as it is pushed in. Should it be flat without any twist all the way up? I can adjust that if it should not have any twists.

Thanks you,
John

Hello John,
The dipstick from my Fleetwood has also a twist in the center of it. To my knowledge all the 59/60 dipsticks had the same twist preventing it from ratling and holding it in place in the tube.

I concur that the twist is correct.

So this thread prompted me to check my dip stick on my 1960 390, it is not a flat metal blade style handle, like shown here or that fits my tranny fluid tube,  but rather a round steel  metal. So I checked the length and the OIL FULL line on mine is 1/2” off at 3 1/2” from bottom vs 4” here...and my oil at full does register about 1/2” over the full mark
See attached.
Any suggestions on finding the correct stick for my use. Otherwise I will just note the difference.

Thanks
Peter

One more question on this. I was prompted to check ebay for Peter to see if there was a correct one available in there and I only saw the style that looked like a squiggly line at the top just below the tube cap. The one I have has a split where the center leg is bent the opposite direction as the outer egde section. I attached a photo of both. Which is correct?

Peter,
I would save an eBay search so you get notified when one posts and also call around to the Cadillac specific dealers. They get them from time to time.
