Title: Diamondback tires
Post by: z3skybolt on May 04, 2021, 09:46:23 AM
O.K.

I just ordered a set of four tires from Diamondback for my 1940 LaSalle 5019. $1,349.00 plus tax.  The current tires are 650-16 and have only a few thousand miles on them but are out of round as a result of sitting for years.

Any how I have long looked forward to buying a set of Diamondbacks given their sterling reputation. When I ordered.... the only tire they have for my car is a brand named Auburn Deluxe.  They are a tire made from molds created by the owner of Diamondback.  Normally they take a name brand tire and then vulcanize the white wall to specifications. Not in this instance however.

I am concerned about the Auburn tire: its durability and quality as I drive my cars 2 or 3,000 miles each year. Also the sales person did not want to say who/where the tires are made. Anyone here have experience with these tires after a few thousand miles of driving?

Thanks,

Bob R.

I would not think wear would be a problem.   A terrible wearing tire will usually go 20k and was likely rated at 40k so even at 3k per year at 7 years when all modern tires seem to get rotten you are only at 21k.

My Diamond Back Classics are "Auburn" tires.
JUST had their first 3k mile rotation, tread looks brand new, they never lost a pound of
pressure, and The Ark floats on a cloud. You'll be very happy with them. Installation is everything.
Be sure the rims are correctly cleaned, tires are properly balanced, etc.
You will love these tires.

I've had the Auburns on my '61 for several years now and have been very happy with them.

Marty,

As you know I searched extensively for something as nice as my wrecked 5227.  Had no luck. Settled for a car not nearly as nice but less than 35% of what I had invested in the Coupe.  This one has 4,000 miles on a quality overhaul 38 years ago.  Been in the same family since 1983. Nice paint and chrome, good interior. Tired suspension.

A month ago I was told Diamondback 700x16 would be on backorder for at least 4 months.  I ordered and received Cokers.

If you have fender tire carriers I would verify that they will fit in the carriers, the Coker 700x16 radial look like bias do not fit.

650X16 are NOT the right size.

I have 8.20-15 Auburn radials from Diamondback on my Auburn Boat-tail Speedster, in one spot on the inside side wall it says, "Designed in USA".  In another area of the inside sidewall it says, "Made in Thailand".  So far they have served me well --- I have Diamondbacks on 3 of my cars, 2 sets made by Michelin and Diamondback's Auburns on the third.

I don't trust Chinese made products at all!   EAM

Neither do I!!  You can't trust anything that they make to function properly or last longer than the time it takes to remove it from the packaging. It will break, malfunction, fail to function at all,  leak, or fall apart. And that's just the little stuff that costs less than $50 dollars, and you are not putting your life on the line, hopefully, when you attempt to use them.
For something as important as a tire, there is absolutely no way I would ever trust one that was made in China, NO WAY!!!  I have just replaced 5 sets of tires on the daily drivers and my car trailer and I insisted on tires made in America. I went with Cooper's on everything except the car trailer, (I'd have to check the brand on those), but even those are American made.  I am very, very happy with the Cooper tires. Excellent ride quality.
My wife had been complaining that her car needed shocks because it wasn't riding like it used to. It had Michelins on it that were ready for replacement, and after installing the new Cooper tires, she said it rides like a new car now.
There's too much riding (literally) on your tires to trust Chinese made tires. They may work for little terdboxes that don't weigh more than a ton, but for a 4k-6k lb American classic, it's a no brainer.
   But that's just my opinion.

Rick

Well congrats then,  looks like a very nice car !  Much better than the one in SLC  I'm sure

I have recently had diamondback auburns put on my 57, look like bias radials.  the only thing that caught me off guard was the tire manufacture date was 2018.  look great, ride great but starting out at 3 years old just means time to replace sooner (age out).  I will not put miles on them to worry about tread.  but I am still happy to have nice riding tires with correct WW width.

All the talk about Cooper tires made me remember their jingle from twenty or thirty years ago...

"Super-dooper, four ply Cooper!"

I've had good luck with them on both Sevilles. ('81/'91.)
