Title: cadillac 500 8,2 cylinderheads
Post by: pepsiii1988 on November 19, 2021, 03:12:58 PM
Hi, I fix my cylinder heads and have found a hole that I do not know if it should be there ? or if it matters that it is there? because right next to it is an original hole that goes out in the same towards to the intake

I'm wondering if someone butchered that head trying to look into the valley.

No, that should not be there. How about the other side? What does it look like?

the other side has no hole if you mean the other cylinder head? Does it really matter that that hole is there? or does it have to be fixed ?

I live in sweden and here are not many such parts to get hold of here

And where the hole is, its just a empty space so the hole does not affect to any oil or water channel

Seeing as where you are, those heads aren't on any street corner. If the engine was running fine, there is no intrusion by that hole into an intake or exhaust side, it breaches no water jacket and doesn't affect the operation, just live with it.

Anyone else see something that I don't?

Jimmy,
Look at the two pictures. one is a 500 cylinder head and the other (rusty with bigger holes) is a 425 inch motor cylinder head.. Check the casting numbers. The numbers are on the top of the head between the rocker mounting points. Check for the last three (of 7) numbers. They will end with 250, 902, 493, 552, and 423. Let us know what you find.

Ha, another attempt to reduce weight, much of that seen in 1977.

They took almost 100 pounds out of the motor (425). They look like swiss cheese compared to a 5200.

Is 100 pounds worth the integrity of the heads? Maybe in design, but someone really did a hack job on Jimmy's heads.

John,
Trying to find out which heads he has. if they are 425 heads than thats "normal"
I don't think anyone did that to the head. It looks exactly like the "as cast" holes.

Hello

Those "holes" are the oil return paths to the pan. Check out my two pictures of my heads from my 68 472. They have about 4 of these holes.
Make sure there are no cracks.

Best regards,
Nicolas

Greg.
Look at the first picture in the thread in the original post. That is a total hack job done by a jigsaw or Sawzall. That surely couldn't be a factory casting hole. Ray Charles could see that.

I don't know for sure.  The original pic is pretty small so we can't really get a good look at it.    I remember my 425 looking a lot like Greg's when we can make bigger.   Lots of really broken looking holes all over the place.

Still waiting for the OP to get back on casting number. That will answer his question of whether this is "as cast" or damaged.

If he ever does, I'm calling a hack job and damaged but still operable.

Top center of the cylinder head between the push rods and the top head bolt

The numbers are cast in and raised.  Didn't look like your head was that dirty so should be fairly easy to see.

If we are placing bets I'm betting they are 425's.

Eventually we'll find out. I still call the way those holes were made, a hack job. NO factory casting has saw blade over-runs in it.
