Title: 1959 Cadillac parts assembly manual
Post by: Ivan Yurtin on December 09, 2021, 11:40:13 PM
Is there a parts assembly manual for the 1959. It's difficult to restore a car without one.

Thanks,

Ivan Yurtin

I've not found one yet. Faxon Auto Literature has available a 1960 Cadillac Written Assembly Manual Reprint. As the '59/'60 models are similar, it may be of help. Unfortunately, there are many references in the manual's text to various diagrams and figures, all of which are missing from this manual. I contacted Faxon about a '59 manual and they do not have it.

Faxon also has reprints of the 1959 and 1960 Cadillac Serviceman Service Bulletins. And without question you should have the reprint of the factory service manual.

You can also purchase a CD of the master parts list which contains exploded views of many of the vehicle's assemblies.

There continues to be no 1959-60 CLC Authenticity Manual. Enough said about that.

There are no paid employees working on this project; everyone is a volunteer.

Speaking of volunteers, more and more it is getting even harder to get people to raise their hands, to step up and help other volunteers for events, to be Club Directors, on both National and Local level or for projects such as these.

If you have specific knowledge and are so inclined to assist, or even could perhaps proofread, please reach out to Bill Anderson (one of, if not THE hardest working man in the CLC & CLC MRC) who is CLC Chief Judge, Technical & Authenticity Manager, CLC Museum Director, Chairman of the CLC MRC Fall Festival among other stuff.

If you haven't heard, the CLC is accepting nominations (yes, you can self nominate) for the National Board of Directors through December 31.  If you are interested please reach out to Lars Kneller.

And please consider to host an event or some how become involved with your local region or a chapter of the CLC.  They need you!!!

Is there a specific item or two or generally overwhelmed by the task?
if it's a "basket case", then you are your own worst enemy.   aka, look before you leap.
If you take one apart to restore, the SOP is to take zillions of pictures and notes as you disassemble, just for this purpose, because it takes months/years and memories fade.
People post "what are these left over parts?" all the time here.   That's no guarantee, as I have lost digital pictures in the past.   Best to keep a project binder.   Adds to sales value also if everything is documented.aka provenance.  That's part of the extra cost of restoration some people don't understand.   You not only pay to re-install, but disassemble, catalog and store during the work.  Labor intensive costly task.

If later, then there's plenty of commercials restorers that might be willing to tackle the project for a big wallet.
I don't advise restore by internet, but plenty here willing to post.   Wrench turning and body work - "No app for that"  You don't know what you get with Utube videos.
If DIY, find some other local enthusiasts or clubs that can provide advice/help.
The company knew how to assemble the cars, and they were not caring for cost reasons about or expecting someone would want to restore after 60+ years.
eg;For '58 I have a factory spot weld book that lays out where all the welds are and shows the panels etc. so there maybe other sources for the info you seek.  Suppliers catalogues, the old body shop manuals/catalogues might also contain pearls of whizdumb.
Lots of '59s out there.  A parts car is another way to assist - you can go look.   There's some resto blogs but I don't follow '59.   Might be an owners group too?   I don't recall a resto/project tab on this site.   Other brands I follow have them.   Something for the CLC to mull over.   How to archive, store, protect that info.   I shout but no one listens.

Thanks, Sue, for educating others to potential possibilities to aid the Club. I am already the ongoing Secretary and Newsletter Editor for the St. Louis Region. Happy Holidays!

Ivan, in answer to your question. I believe I once saw a 1959 Cadillac only Parts Manual, (different from the Shop Manual). Somewhere there are photos of it but as of writing I cannot locate them. Will post if located. Hope there is a shot of the index page to show what it covers. Can't recall if it was strictly a Parts List or if it had "how to fix" sections in it, like a Shop Manual. As I recall it was a Parts List specific to 1959 Cadillac, and was different from the Shop Manual. If that is the case that would still be useful. I would imagine this is probably an uncommon item.
