The $1 Cadillac. Urban legend?

There is a story I have now heard from multiple people that I am beginning to wonder if its possibly true or just an urban legend.

Story goes that there was a man that owned a Cadillac.   Man passes away.   His will states that the Cadillac will be sold and the proceeds from the sale are to go to his mistress.   It turns out his widow is the one in charge of the sale.   She does as instructed and sells the car for $1 and turns that over to the mistress.  Guess the man figured he would out live his wife?

Both people that I heard the story from said it took place in South Dakota and I don't think they would have known each other.   Time line appears to be around 2000.    One person made it sound like the car was like a 99.   The other make it sound like it was a 59.

Anyone hear this story or anything like this?

Mr. Hopland,

snopes.com indicates "legend".

You can read several variations at:

The Cadillac version appears to be the third example.

I remember hearing that story back in the late 1980s.   And it was a Mercedes then.  LOL

There's also the one about the "almost new" Corvette that was driven off the road in a snow storm.  The car wasn't found until months later in a snow covered ditch.  There was nothing wrong with the car except the horrible smell from the driver who was trapped inside and died.

Also the one about the guy responding to an old woman's ad in the paper for a 1953 Chevy for sale.  Presumably the car belonged to her son who never returned from Viet Nam.  The car was only a few hundred dollars so he went to look and of course there was a 53 Corvette in the garage...

I like the $1.00 Cadillac though.

Anything is possible, but heard this so long ago (20-40 years ago) and believe it to be urban legand.

An acquaintance of mine saw an ad for an almost new Goldwing motorcycle with some small scratches and  available for $200 which is a real steal. There was no phone number and the address was way up in the hills East of Seattle but he decided to take the drive and check it out.  The bike was in the driveway and needed very little work and a young man came out on crutches and said it was not for sale.  Following him was his mother who had cosigned for the bike and wanted to protect her son from himself and sold it to my friend for the $200 balance owing on it.

There are these legends out there but I know this one to be true.

Sans reliable evidence, most tales along these lines should be regarded as apocryphal.

hehe. some of those storys are over here to,

one of our stories is about the widow that came to a used car lot with her husbands "golden age" buick or cadillac, and the car salesman sad to her that this was just an old gas guzzler that no one would want, and bought it from her for something like 1k, and sold it the next day for many times that,

i've heard that story many times.

If you google tucker 10 you will see the story of my mothers cousin who was widowed with an old car of her husbands in the garage.  She wanted him to junk it but he refused and after he died it was sold on eBay for $400,000  and then restored and resold for $1,000,000

well I dunno about $1 but I once bought a '78 Eldorado Barritz that was brown for $200 because it needed a CV joint.  I bought the CV joint for $75 (it was the 90s) and had her back on the road within a day and then drove her another 20K.  used to tow my buddies cars with it when they would die and could push any car across the parking lot when I threw it into 2nd.  great. frickin. car.

Here's one that is true.

I would have drove the wheels off of it, but this guy didn't.
