I was wondering if the 322 in my 39 lasalle has Babbitt bearings or standard bearings. Also do they require the same inspection that standard bearings and surfaces do and is there any issues or certain things to look for in the Babbitt bearings. My engine has not been cranked in years but I have my fingers crossed that the internals are still ok.

Thanks

You have shell bearing as per all V8 flatheads. The manual give were tolerances for the journals.

Just a comment. The bearings are available in a variety of undersize options.
They are usually military surplus.
Check with and engine parts supplier like Terrel Machine to find out what sizes they have before machining a crankshaft.

Steve, Of course you remember that the 341 & 353 cubic inch flathead V8's through at least 1932 used babbitt on both the rods and mains. I AM curious as to when (year and engine) the change to insert bearings was made.

Sorry Rick I was referring to the 'New' engines than I'm familiar with starting in 1936, They, including Shanes engine are shells. I have never got into the earlier type of V8.

Thanks guys for the info. I was sweating finding a trustworthy machine shop in my area to re-babbit my engine if needed. 1 less thing on my list of things to worry about. Lol
