So my AC works but the compressor seems hot to the touch.  Is this normal or a sign of it going bad?  It doesnt make noise and seems to work appropriately.

Tim,

First question is; do you have the correct oil viscosity added to the compressor, and second have you added the correct amount?

These compressors with R12 required the mineral oil viscosity of 525 with about 9oz added to a new drained setup.

Tim,

Most of the compressor will be hot to the touch, that's normal as it's compressing the refrigerant, and heat is the result. The only place that is not hot is typically right at the low side hose connection.
Now if it's making an excessive amount of noise, and the paint is baking off, those would be signs of a problem.

Rick its quiet but just hot to the touch except for one of the lines which is ice cold.  Guess its working? Lol.  I'm not familiar with these old systems.  It kept me cool today and its 96 degrees.

Sounds like it's working just fine then.
