G'day all

I would appreciate it if someone out there that knows which way the Tailshaft of a 1937 LaSalle is positioned between the Transmission and the Diff.

That is, is the Slip Yoke at the Transmission end, or the Differential end.

Thanks,

On the 1940 LaSalle it is on the transmission end and I presume it is the same on all years.

BRUCE, No need to be sad about it. On my '38 ,the "slip-joint" is on  the xmiss end, not at the diff. end.  Don't tell me that you are working on a '37 La Salle. That's one reason I got a '38, they're easy to work-on. (The GM shop manual is the same for both the '37 & '38) Good Luck,JIM

G'day Jim,

No, I am not working on a '37 LaSalle, but a fellow club member up in Queensland has one, and his car has the Slip Yoke at the Differential.  He was experiencing vibrations.

Another person with a '38 LaSalle has it the same way, and yet another person with a '36 has the slip yoke at the Transmission .

So, it seems as though the tailshaft can be put in either way.

It would be nice to know which way around it is supposed to be, but all my engineering thoughts would have the slip yoke at the Transmission end.

On page 22 of the 1935 to 1950 parts book clearly shows that the slip joint faces the transmission.

Thanks Frank,

Well, from what I have received in the way of answers, there are at least 3 1937 and 1938 LaSalle's running around with their tailshafts back the front.

But, I am pretty sure that they will be changed around shortly.

I am not sure about 1937 but in 1940 the location of the slip joint depended on the model.  Quoting from the 1940 Manufacturing Information

"For Models 40-50-52 & 62 the slip splines must be assembled to the transmission to insure clearance for the lubrication fitting.

For all other models assemble slip joint end to axle."

The reference given is information from the engineering department to the factory floor.  It is about 200 pages long and is very detailed.  Some of the information has updates for the 1946 models.  I have copies available if anyone is interested.

G'day Brad,

The plot thickens.

I wonder what the reason for putting the Slip Yoke down the back when it would be adding to the "Unsprung weight" of the vehicle.

Could it be that in some models, it was impossible to grease the slip yoke when it was at the front?
