Hello everyone,

I took some time off of my LaSalle project.  I am back on it.  I am going to overhaul the entire brake system.  From past recommendations, I will be ordering a rebuilt master brake cylinder and the wheel cylinder kits.  Which vendor do you recommend I get this from?  Kanter?

Secondly, I will be purchasing a rebuilding kit for the carburetor.  It is a Carter WD-O (or is it a 0, zero)?  I lifted the carb off the intake manifold and it had a "166" stamped on the bottom, the surface that mates directly to the manifold.  Is this the model number?

I'm also looking for any outside trim, thanks!

Juan,

A Carter WDO Dual Down-Draft Climatic Control Carbs was used on the the 39 Lasalle.

The 1938-1939 used a model 392S which had 166 stamped on the face of the flange. Other Carter models were also used. But this is original so would stick with it. I purchase my carb kits from the Carburetor Shop (www.thecarburetorshop.com). They provide jets and other parts the cheap kits do not furnish and are nice folks to work with. The kits are over $60.00 but if you want the car to run well chat with them about a kit.

I have a 37 LaSalle coupe and really love the 37-39 coupes. Restore her.

Oh, on brake parts. If you are going to keep the car you might consider getting the wheel cylinders and master cylinder sleeved, much better than original. Places like White Post Restoration do great work.

Thanks for the info.  Doesn't the '39 LaSalle coupe have model # 423S as far as the Carter carb?  Thanks...

Juan,

As I stated before there was more than one Carter Model that is correct for the 39 LaSalle:
423S with a base number of 248, engine numbers 2D - 1701 and higher
392S with base number 166, engine numbers 2C - 1 and higher
Or 460S superseded these in later years.

when i called Coopers for a carb rebuild kit, I stated it was a 423S model.  Would it still fit the 392S?  Or should I just cancel the order and get it from thecarburetershop.com??  Where did you cross reference the stamped 166 to the 392S?  I've been looking all over!  Thanks...

Juan,

Once the brass tag, with the carburetor number is gone from the Carter Carburetor the only reference is the base plate number.

Go to the thecarbuetorshop.com an d look at their rebuilt kit listing it will tell you if the kits are the same.

Thanks John,

I called the carburatorshop.com and mentioned I had a '39 Lasalle with a Carter WDO carb, with 166 stamped on the bottom of the carb.  He told me there were various model numbers associated with 166 and that I needed to supply the metering rod number.  So, I'll take apart the carb and see if I can get the number.
