I am finisihing up a 1941 4246 cov. and wish to know if their is some sort of paper? or some thing thats go on the under side of the trunk, or is just painted.   Thanks Don 20417

Doug Houston

First, what is a 4246 convertible?

Answer to the queswtion is that all of the underbody is painted. There is no paper on the underside of the car.

I think he means that impregnated paper soundproofing stuff under the deck lid.

There was a piece of heavy fiber or felt, impregnated with a tar-like substance, crimped between the panels on the underside of the decklid.  It doesn't completely fill the spaces you see underneath.

Doug Houston

Oh, OK. Matter of fact, the tar felt in a decklid is sandwiched between the outer decklid skin and the inner structure. Maybe it could be replaced, but it would be a tricky job.
