Hi All,
I have bought a 1970 Eldorado. It has the original 500 engine (verified by chassis number) but the transmission has been replaced - I think by a 1976 unit. The transmission number starts 76-AK.

I am having problems with the starter grinding. I have found that the teeth were chewed both on the starter and the ring gear. I bought a new starter hoping that it would take up the slack, but it's still noisy. Were there differences between the 1970 and 1976 set-ups - for example number of teeth on the ring gear that I should know about before I start pulling the engine out to change the flex plate?

Main questions:
1. Is my 76-AK transmission a 1976 unit?
2. Is a '76 transmission into a '70 a straight swap - or will I have further problems? Should I be trying to locate another transmission?
3. In the 1970 shop manual it mentions a bracket that must be removed to get the starter out. Mine didn't have any bracket - just the 2 bolts through the bellhousing. Can anyone supply a photo of this bracket so I can make one up - It must be affecting the starter alignment.

Thanks,
Ron Wilson

Only significant difference between 70-76 would be the ratio of the final drive if it was swapped along with the transmission.  Engine blocks were the same.

Seems like we found both starter and flex plate issues.

Here are some recent threads, looks like they got spread into 3 and I dont have time to sort them out at the moment.

They are the same.  I have seem a few of the cases cracked around the starter and give the same problem you discribed.  But I would try a new starter first.
