Just got the GM Heritage build sheet for our '40 Cadillac 60S and discovered it was originally Beaver Brown (Luminescence) with Vincennes Red wheels.  This
will necessitate a pretty complete repaint (it's now dark blue). Question is: Was the original dash done in the same color as the car or was in wood grained?  Thanks.

Ray,
The CLC Authenticity Manual (Class 10) states the following:
40-60S  Trim Code 24,26,28,41,46,51,52,55,56, &56A  Dash Finish:  Seaforth Beige (Early cars used Canterbury Beige)

40-60S  Trim Code 23,25, 27,44,53 & 54  Dash Finish Hermes Gray  (Early cars used Dexter Gray)

Seaforth Beige cars used Ivory Plastic parts
Hermes Gray cars used Gray Plastic parts

Hope this helps.

Thanks so much for that information.  Since my car was originally delivered on 24 Nov 1939 (with Trim Code 51) it's probably  one of the earlier cars.  Looks like the dash should be done in  Canterbury Beige.  Will let our paint shop go on the search for that.

You'll need to understand that any search for a color name might lead you over a cliff.  If you will want to match the original  cloor of your dash, be it gray or brown, your best bet is to find someone who has a glove box door in the proper color, polish it well, then have your painter match the color as near as possible, which can be very close.

The only 1940 Cdillacs that had wood grained dash panels were the 72, 75, and 90 series cars.

All of the steering column parts and gear shift shaft would be painted the same color as the dash.  You may also be able to find the original color underneath some covered portion of these parts if they have all been repainted before.

Canterbury Beige or Seaforth Beige were the colors used on garnish mouldings around the windshield and rear window, the windlace retainers, mouldings around the upper door openings, horn button and the back of the rearview mirror. The dash, steering column and steering wheel hub on both early and later models was Carnelian Brown, an iridescent color. My car was built 13 Dec 1939  and was in the later color. I don’t know what was considered an early car, production began in October. Seaforth Beige matches a color used on ‘81 Saabs. The current R-M color number for Carnelian Brown is 202-53248.

Thanks to all who answered my question.  Appreciate your help.  Once we sell our '46 62 sedan which is nearing completion of it's repaint, will have the capital needed to do a proper restoration job on the '40.
