My 56 sedan rear bumper is in pretty poor shape, and I want to replace it with a 53 rear bumper. My question is will it fit?

Otto Skorzeny

Just about anything can be made to fit. Will it look presentable and  will the contours fit the body lines of the 56? Not at all.

Look at the area where the bumper meets the quarter panel. The 56 tail light pylons are shaped to receive the bumper. The exhaust ports are about 8" to 10" higher as well.

The 56s were totally different from the 54s and 55s. All of them are totally different from 53s.

The 54-56 cars are larger than their predecessors and the bumper may even be wider than the 53.

Keep looking for a correct one or have yours repaired.

John,

Is that psychobilly right rear bumper chrome a 67/68 front left bumper piece?  It would be fun to identify each part by years as close as could be possible.

Any luck with your pursuit of the "one piece at a time and it didn't cost me a dime" Cadillac? I did not mean to offend when I answered your post in that regard. I just could not imagine it might be available.

Paul,
No offence taken... ;D  The guy that has the car won't part with it... Some things are just priceless I guess... I have thought about building a clone to it... I would use a Northstar driveline...

I would like to see the original someday. Blending all those various years together must have been quite the challenge. It could be even a greater challenge today with all the additional years available now.

Here you go.

There were actually two different psychobilly Cadillacs produced. The one shown above is actually the second one built and differs from the first in a number of ways, most notably that it's a hardtop. The first one was a convertible. Here's a link to the museum that has the second one. It has all kinds of other cool cars and stuff there too.

Here's a link to the story of how the second, most famous, one was built.

Here is a picture of the first one, commissioned to promote the song. It's not quite as nice as the second one.
