Hi i was wondering if someone could tell me what kind of oil I should be using on a 390? is 10-30 good or should i go with higher grade

Mike Josephic CLC #3877

I'm believe 10W-30 would likely be OK -- but what does your owners manual
or shop manual ecommend?  That's the first place to look.

The manual usuallly publishes a range of recommended grades depending on what
temperature extremes there are expected where you live, what kind of driving you do,
(severe service vs. light driving) etc.

I use either 10W-30 or 10W-40 in my older cars.  Make sure you use a quality oil with the
API seal on it.

I use 20W50 oil in my cars, saeeing as they are all high mileage engines.

Never had a problem down here, but then, we don't use Antifreeze either.

Don't really want to start this again but the Shell Rotella oils rated CJ (which is getting to be all you can get now) also have reduced ZDDP because diesel engines are now required to have a catalytic converters.  The CI rated oil is OK if you can find it.

I use Amsoil HDD 5-30 Gasoline/Diesel oil in my 63 along with the EAO22 Amsoil nanofiber oil filter. The HDD 5-30 has 1266 ppm phosphorus and 1379 ppm Zinc. Amsoil also has 10-40 & 20-50 motor oils with equally high levels of Zinc and Phosphorus that will protect your cam and lifters.

Attached is a bulletin addressing the issue, hope it is informative for you.
