Hopefully some one knows..     The 49 fuel pump has a bowl assembly sitting on top. Standing on the passenger side of car looking at the fuel pump, just below this bowl ass. is a small hole. Yesterday I saw gas coming out of this hole. If I covered it with my finger it stopped and the car kept running the same while covered.

The fuel does not stream out but weeps out. My eyes are not good enough to tell if this small hole has threads it in for a screw.
Does anyone know what this small hole is for, what it does, why its there, or what this weeping indicates.
Maybe like a leaking waterpump, with a weep hole as indicator of a problem, I don't know.

G'day Art,

Sounds to me like a Vent relief hole, and also acts as an outlet in case the Fuel Pump Diaphragm is holed, like yours may be, so that the fuel doesn't fill up the Sump and cause a massive explosion.

There would be less of a chance of the fuel catching fire if it pours over the Intake Manifold cover than into the Sump, plus, the smell of the leaking fuel would be more obvious than if trapped in the Sump, diluting the oil and destroying the bearing surfaces in the process.

So then, assuming your correct and it sounds reasonable to me, then its time to rebuild or replace, would you agree. Art

Oh yes.

Fuel leaking from the body of the pump is a sure sign that something is wrong with the Diaphragm.

ART, The small hole has 2 functions 1 shows when thhe diaphram is leaking 2. try putting your finger over the hole with the engine rurring, it serves as a "VENT" for the diaphram. JIM
