What is the best way to test an A/C compressor in order to find out if everything in and on it is working properly?

On the car, running, with a set of gauges on the high and low side as well as using a leak detector for leaks.

I have yet to change the oil with new 10W40, but I'll get to it very soon. Thanks for all of your interest and help.
