Hello, I just took off my hubcaps and see that they will need new chrome. Previous owner had chromed them with the pits still in them. They have some minor dents as well. Where should I send them for a thorough restoration? Thank you

Hi Ty
If the cost of your chroming is anything like it is in this country (England) it may be cheaper to buy new!  I bought my set from Mcveys. at a big cost to be sure but the re chroming was 90% of the cost of new.

Thank you Steve, Wow, I will check with them and perhaps sell mine to persons needing one or two or so at a time. How do the new ones look? Are they very close in apperance and do they have the same construction on the back side?
Thank you.

They were absolutely beautiful Ty, indistinguishable from originals, sadly since buying them a tiny piece of chrome has flaked off about 1mm round, I complained and was offered a full refund, a replacement, or have them re chromed, all very well, but from this distance its cheaper for me to get one re chromed here than go through all that international shipping both ways and customs too, but for you in the US any problems would be covered.
And your right about selling yours on, I saw a set on eBay go for more money than the re pros, and they needed chrome!  that's what prompted me to buy also.
PS  you wouldn't know of a centre hood hinge strip for the 37 would you?

Hello Steve, I found a center hood hinge strip for my car, but it has many small dents in it because someone took it off with pointed pliers and I just recently received an estimate of $300-$400 US to have it refinished. But as you know that is better than no hinge at all. Let me know the correct length of yours and I will be glad to search for one for you. There are different lengths of hood hinges based on (wheel base I think) model. I will be going to Hershey in October and that may be a good place to find one. If you need the end piece to mount the strip near the cowl vent, I do have an extra one but it will need chrome.

That's good to hear that McVey's offered to fix your problem, Steve.

I have always found their products to be of superior quality and have never had a complaint with their service. They have old Cadillacs of their own so it seems they truly care about providing the best merchandise and service they can. They aren't cheap but they aren't outrageous either.

Hi Ty,

If you are going to McVeys for the full wheel discs (I don't think they do the "button" hubcaps) make sure you tell them they are for the big series (75 and 85) cars. The discs for the smaller series are different and, though they look the same, they will not fit. The difference is in the depth of the inner ring on the back of the discs.

I bought mine from them years ago and they are excellent.

Regards,

Hy Ty

Yes I do need the strip retaining piece for the rear of the hinge, can I buy that from you?  Also the length of the strip is not so important as mine is the smallest series so even bigger ones could be cut down, Ironically I only need the core as my stainless is good, so even that piece would do if you could find one.

This business about different size wheel discs is new to me, I will have to take them to the workshop and try them on a wheel, my car is under restoration so have never been fitted yet. Mcveys never said there were different sizes, that's got me kind of worried!

My problem over, the wheel covers fit nicely, but I guess that size and series is something to be discussed with McVay's before buying.

That's good to hear, Steve. My guess is that when you ordered the hubcaps you told them what model you had. They're pretty on the ball over there so I'm sure they wouldn't just send the first ones they grab off the shelf.

Yes your probably right Otto. I bought them the year before last and the details of ordering them are now vague, I do remember though that they were only making them to order and they took about 6 weeks.

Hello Steve, apparently our discussion regarding my chrome (SS) center hood strip, and your need for a center hood hinge were confused by me. I think what you need is the piece that joins the two halves of the hood together (not the lengths that screw to the hood panels, and also not the stainless steel or chrome finished piece top center of the hood length. Regardless, I do have an extra strip retaining piece for the rear of the hinge that you need (picture attached). You should first contact Bruce Berghoff in Michigan, USA (231) 889 3343 or berghoff@chartermi.net or McVey's in Kansas, USA, (913) 722 0707 or partsforever@kc.rr.com first. If they do not have one to sell I will be glad to give you my extra one.

Hello Steve,
Looks like your core is the same shape as mine. My hood is also off the car at this time. The end piece just inserts in the end to hold the hood down. One end of the end piece is the same shape as the chrome strip and that is where the chrome piece will abut at rest. The other half of the end piece has the shape of the core and slides in. That is all there is at that end of things. Just send me your mailing address and I will be glad to give you the end piece, but it will need to be rechromed. I need to have my repro piece plated as well.
