The 57 in my shop looks original, some rust but the shaft is satin black, not the joints or support.

I have dismantled mayny 40s 50s and 60 cadillacs over the years and i have never seen paint on a drive shaft from those eras. Cars were built to drive. Today most car are over restored. It looks pretty , it protects them, but its not the way the came from the factory.

I disagree there, I think car makers, Cadillac included sprayed the absolute minimum they had to on under body parts but they still did apply some satin black without primer, any spare part you bought had this thin coating and still do today, this was rusted or worn away by the time these cars were dismantled but they couldn't let them out the factory bright steel, they wouldn't make it to the first dealer without getting surface rust.
