 ???
Someone who know how many balls there must be in the steering gear on a 1960 caddilac?
Have seen a picture of a rep. set and the picture shows 25 balls. But in mine there are only 21...

I just did a search for one of my favorite restoration sites, in which each part of the car was detailed in a blog type form. It is no longer there. But, I do recall it being mentioned that the balls are of 2 different sizes. Reinstall them wrong and the steering will chatter.

When removing them, place them in the proper order of removal. You will probably need a set of calipers to determine the difference in the sizes. I've never taken one apart, but I'm sure there are a few people here that have.

Does anyone out there know what happened to Ed Mobley's site on the restoration of his '60??
Lot's of valuable information lost there.

Hi.
Thank you for answering.
When removing them they just fall out, but it is no difference in the sizes.
Hope there are a people here that know even more about this.

It should show it in the Shop Manual.  If you don't have one, you had better get one!

Hi.
Thank you. I have ordered shopmanual both book and cd :-)
But are still waiting for it and the steering gear is in parts, and the car stands still.....

The balls were recently still available from GM as a kit. There are 2 types of balls: the ones which are shiny and the others which are black. The black ones are of a smaller diameter to reduce steering effort. The balls should be introduced that way in the nut: one shiny, one black, one shiny, and so on.
In the fifties all the balls had the same diameter; this method came later.

That's one of them. He had a very detailed page in which he described all the propblems and his corrections to the problems, so someone else would know what to expect.
This page in the link is basically a rough draft of what was with I think was a Yahoo page. Nope. It was geocities page. Either way gone from the web.

Thanks Hassel for putting that up there. And I did tell you right about the different sized balls in the box. Roger affirmed that.

You was right, and now I can put the balls as described.
Thanks

If there are any web pages on Geocities you want to save better get them now.  Geocities is closing down.
