Hi, I am currently removing the 346 engine/trans from my 38 7519 to reseal and detail them.  I am trying to determine if the engine is the original block for the car.  The only numbers I can see on the back of the block are "672" and they are CAST on the block.  I have read that the engine number should match the VIN number of the car.  I am assuming the engine number is stamped on the block somewhere.

I am hopeful that this is the original engine for the car as I have been told it is.  My Grandfather bought the car in 1967 with a fairly complete history of the car dating back to 1938, including the original title, previous owners names (there were 3), and a lot of service records.  I do not see where the engine was ever removed from the car prior to it being rebuilt in 1968.

If someone could tell me if I am correct so far in what I think I am looking for on the engine.

     Thanks!  Trey

Engine number should be behind the left hand cylinders, stamped into the casting, there are two sets of numbers there though.
According to  The Standard Catalog of Cadillac 75 engine numbers started at 3270001 and should be the same as on the frame.

Thanks Steve...  I got the engine/trans out today.  Cleaned that area of the engine off and found the numbers.  It is the original engine for the car, 3271525.

Thanks again!
