Hi Guys,

I have another part I did not remove.
Where does it go?

And for a bit of fun, what about the second photo.

Thanks Guys,

I found the glove box switch.

This one must be for the park brake, which is locked on and will not release. I guess that is another problem to look at.
As Bruce said the switch is broken. Where would I get another?

I also found out there is no way the heater would ever work. Check the photo. Rubber joiner, What rubber joiner.

For the Switch, if you can't get a Cadillac one, get one for a Chevrolet.   They are the same, and probably cheaper.

Hi Ken

It took me a while to find that silly switch.  It is not listed with the parking brake in the master parts book, at least the copies I have.  Once I figured out it was the same switch as the glove box, I then did a search for that part number.

The part can be found at lectric limiited, I think they are in Chicago, IL.  Once on the mainpage of the site, go down to the 3rd row and look for switches and click on the link.  The glove box switch is the 3rd item down.

Parking brake switch  Lectric Limited SGB2006

http://www.lectriclimited.com/mainpage.htm

Phone  001 708-563-0400

Their site will not allow you to order on line since their system does not know this works on 57 or 58 Cadillac, so you will have to call and order over the phone using the SGB2006 number.  They were a little difficult to deal with, but I was able to convince them I knew it would work for my application.  Of course, you will not use the tab and lamp that comes with this.

On my Brougham, the wire lead that connects to the switch was not really long enough and put a huge strain on the switch.  I added about 3 or 4 inches of additional wire there to relieve that problem.  Making the connection is a pain though, but it can be done.

My parking brake was stuck as well and I remember it was hard to get that thing released.  I ended up buying another parking brake assembly that moved freely.

The rubber piece that connects the blower motor to the air intake can be found at  Classic Auto Parts and they are in Norway.

Once on their site, go down about 2/3 to the bottom and you will see the round and rectangular rubber boots that you will need.  Brace your self for the cost though, they are very expensive.  Mastermind has the square one now, and his was not quite as expensive.

Good luck

The parking brake warning switch is the same as the glove box switch with a MUCH shorter plunger.

Walter, the plunger looked to be the same length in either application.  My original brake was there, but the head/chrome piece had become removed from the body of the switch.  Looked like it was crimped on and I could not repair it.  Most times, I've seen the plungers break, only leaving a little stub remaining.

In any event, it works fine and  there is no other solution I know of.

It COULD be different on a Brougham.  I doubt it, but...

The brake switch on my car barely has a plunger.  As soon as I lay my foot on the parking brake, the warning light comes on in the dash.  It's the same exact unit as the glove box switch except for the plunger.

Thanks for the help members. Good as always.

I have just removed both sets of shock absorbers. They are all encased within a spring set up. Was this a "fix" for poor shocker performance?
I can post a photo if required.

I intend to replace all the shockers. Do I need to refit the springs?

After 50 years your car probably needs new springs front and rear. Even a car that was never driven is going to need new springs just from the sheer weight of the car squashing them down over that long period of time.

Likely someone put the coil-over shocks on as a quick fix.

I'd suggest buying brand new heavy duty springs for the front and rear and then install air shocks in the rear. Even new springs  succumb quickly to these 5000 lb cars.

I did that 6or7 years ago and it's made all the difference in the ride and handling and the car sights nice and high and level. Don't be afraid that heavy duty springs will hurt the ride. These gun boats need all the support they can get.

Forrest,

Thanks for your comments.

I have sent an email off, to a couple of spring places on that big list of suppliers, to see about buying new springs.

Will let you know how I go.
