I am trying to get new wires and a distributor for my 54 Series 62 Sedan (previous owner reemoved them as a "security" measure to prevent theft).  All local stores have them for 56 but not for 55 and back.  I know the engines are basically the same.  What is the difference?  Can a 56 cap be made to fit an earlier distributor?

I assume you need just the cap.

I don't know the difference if any, but why not just take one from one of your '56s and see if it fits on the '54.

The 55 back caps do not have the window in them for adjusting the dwell angle with the engine running. I have never tried to fit the later cap on my 54 so I couldn't tell you if they are interchangeable. The early cap is quite easily purchased from specialist dealers [eg. Kanter], but I bought mine from regular independent parts stores in the USA when I have travelled there.
Good luck,

The wires are identical, but I believe the distributor cap is larger for 1956. Anyway, the rotor is different too.
