Oil Filter System for the 346
« on: January 06, 2010, 11:26:49 PM »
Hey folks,

Some time ago I added a post about the correct "dealer-installed" oil filter  system for the 346 engines.   I have acquired all the correct  pieces to add a system to my '48. That is all the pieces except one tiny piece. That is the fitting on the timing chain cover with the special "banjo" oil fitting bolt. This is where the oil is returned into the crank case.
Does anyone know where I can get one of these? I would gladly purchase if anyone has a spare.

Thanks in advance for your help

Vic

Vic,

I had a few made up a few years ago.

I have one left.

It is not original, but one cannot see the difference.

If interested I cans send a picture.

Thanks for the response, John.

After visiting a local (newly found) friend who has a handful of 346 engines around his garage, I have decided to use a different approach.

Most of his engines have a drilled hole (with a fitting) on the side of the timing chain cover. They use this as the return point for filtered oil.

One could debate whether it is a good idea  to discharge filtered oil onto the timing chain.  On the positive side, it provides additional lubriaction. On the negetive side it tends to make the front oil seal work harder than it should.

According to my new found friend, some dealers installed them with the return at the side of the timing chain while others use the banjo bolt in place of one of the timing cover bolts.

Thanks for your offer, John.

Best regards,

Vic

Vic,

Good for you. New friends are great.

The point is to have the oil by-pass filter.

Good Luck
