What are those two rectangular chrome things on either side of license plate?

The one's I've seen have little vertical grill bars there or nothing at all. Maybe they're for backup lights or something? Pretty odd looking.

They are dealer or after market bumpers to protect the body from damage caused people who drive by sound method. The '58s had four verticle bars in each location as Forrest said........'57 had nothing.

I have a photo of a '57 with the vertical bars in that area. There are 5 on each side like those on the '58.
