I would think ballast resistor for the ignition system but I dont own or work on 57's so will go with what the experts say.

It must have more than 2 terminals on it?  Thinking it would need at least 3 to get 3 speeds assuming 'off' is not counted as a speed and 'hi' is full power?   When did they start putting those in the air boxes?

My 55 has the 3 inch long ignition ballast resistor as well.

On my '57 the ballast resistor for the ignition is on the firewall to the left of the distributor. The ballast resistor for the heater fan is just to the left of the booster. To clarify, left is when standing in front of the car facing the engine.

Hi Bill,

As Paul Flykt(Coupe) said, it is the Heater Resister.

I haven't refitted mine yet but I do have a colour wiring circuit for it if you need any further help.

Regards

Ken
