I've located the following numbers on the left rear of the engine block:
                         8F34542     and
                          *83540*4*

What do I have here?  Am I tanked?

I think tank numbers are on the right front.

As Jim said Chuck, I too always thought the tank engines were stamped front right, all three engines I have are, guess some early production ones may have slipped the net.

It ain't a tank engine. It's a 1941 engine from a series 62 car.

The alpha-numeric number is the engin e unit number, which has letter "F"in it, so it's a '41. The engine number is for a series 62 car.
