So I decided to check my oil before a sunday stroll in my Caddy. While checking the oil, I noticed it had a smell of gasoline to it.
Not sure if its just me or if this is possible. I did add G.M's EOS to the oil when I changed the oil a few months back. Could that be what I am smelling?  I pulled all the spark plugs a few months back and noticed they were pretty wet.  Do I need to make Colorado altitude adjustments to make her run properly? If so, what exactly should be done?

Check your fuel pump, gas in the oil is sign of a failing fuel pump.
This is should be done ASAP.  Would not want to spin a bearing with really thin oil.

my 2 cents.

Check  the oil level to make sure its not full of gas, but it probably just needs a good long hard drive.

Drain the oil or get a good sample of it and smell it away from the car. You might just be smelling the engine. Carb cars always seem to smell like gas a little bit - especially with this new ethanol crap.

If there is gas in the oil you have a leaky fuel pump diaphragm.

Ditto from me, IF you are getting gas in the oil it is probably a leaking fuel pump diaphragm.  You do not want to drive the car with that condition and you do want to get rid of that gasoline tainted oil.

As always, thanks for the quick responses!!  I am aware of a few fuel pump rebuilders out there but never had any experience with any of them.  Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
South Paw, thanks for the link. Looks pretty interesting. I must say that I am a bit scared to know what really really lies beneath. To be on the safe side, its sounds like something I will do in the near future.
Thanks

If you think you need a fuel pump rebuild, the try this site.  You can buy a kit and rebuild your own, or send them yours and have them rebuild it for you.  The new airtex units have a slightly different exit and your original pipes may or may not fit correctly.

When you remove the pump, on the flange of the pump that bolts to the engine block, there is a number stamped.  That is the number to use to order the rebuild kit if you do it yourself.  If you have most hand tools, you should be able to do it.

Thanks David,
That was actually going to be the topic of my next question. Is there anything in particular I should look for or be especially careful with to make the removal and installation task as smooth as silk?

The fuel pump is easy to get to and put on and off. There aren't any special things you need to know. I have my original in a box since it succombed to ethanol poisening. The one in there now is an off the shelf Airtex unit from Advance Auto. Looks identical and works fine.

Do you have an aftermarket electric fuel pump?  Another member brought up a good point in another thread.  If you have an electric fuel pump in addition to the mechanical and you get a hole in the diaphram the electrical pump will exasperate the problem by pushing fuel through the hole into the crankcase.

No electrical fuel pump that I am aware of but I will take a closer look.

If you have any starting difficulties, it would also be worth checking carb float levels. After the car runs for 15 or 20 seconds, turn it off. There are plugs on the side of the float bowls ( straight slot, smaller than a dime). Gas should be at bottom of hole if level is correct. Just another way you can get gasoline in oil.

Depends on the year. My 57' uses the Rochester 4 Jet, and it does have side plugs. If the carb in question does not have side plugs, the throat would show evidence of wetness where the cover and bowl join, and also in the intake area below the carb. Also, didn't he mention the plugs had a wet look to them?  This kind of leak can usually be smelled from outside the car.

If you decide to have the fuel pump professionally rebuilt, my recommendation is the Arthur Gould Company in NY.

Well  my original plan was to send the fuel pump off for a professional rebuild but I was told by a friend a few days ago that the pump was not original.  I bought an Airtx pump for $50.00 yesterday.
Thanks
