This summer started bad!
My engine has given up, need to put in another one.
It's a 472.
From what years can i pick a motor?

Basically a 472 from 68-74 will bolt right in, as will a 500 From 75-76, or a 500 from an Eldo from 70-76 but the pan will have to be changed.

Each year of engine has it's intricacies, so choose what you want, or what you can get, and deal with them when you are ready to do the swap.

Soren,
Unless something catastrophic has happened, your engine can probably be rebuilt economically.  Any "used" engine you might buy stands the chance of needing to be rebuilt as well.

All the components for the '72 -472 are readily available.

Have now talked to some people and is seems to be a connecting rod bearing that has given up and causes the heavy knocking.
Could it be possible to fix this by taking down the oil pan and reach it from below?

I am aware of this.
My thought was to do a quick engine swap to save the summer season and the rebuilt during the winter.

G'day Soren,

If A Big End is making that much noise, I would be pretty certain that there will be some damage to the Crankshaft Journal, and if there is, the Crank will need grinding, and possible the Rod/s could need re-sizing, which means the Head coming off.

Checking the roundness of the Connecting Rod really cannot be done with the Crank in place.

If the Bearing has spun, then you could be looking at a twisted Crank as well.

I would be looking at picking up a beater car and pulling the engine.   A timing chain, a few gaskets, and a clean up and throw it in.  If you are lucky you will find a similar year and model that will yield some other useful parts and then sell the other good parts here or ebay then still make a few bucks when whats left goes to the scrap yard. You then will have the time to look at rebuilding your original motor.
