Go to Yann Saunders's Cadillac Database and learn about the history of the crest among many other things.

Also, in 1916 the merlets were changed to swans then back to merlets in 1918. Find out why below!

The merlettes themselves represent Merit and virtue.   When appearing as a trio, the merlettes refer to the holy trinity.   They were usually awarded by the school of heralds to knights who made a significant contribution in the crusades.
