I'm swapping my engine in my 72 Deville for a 68-engine.

SDoren,
If you are asking whether you should use the carburetor from the '68 , on the '68 engine my suggestion would be yes.  The 68 is a higher compression engine with other differences that are better suited to the 68 carb.

Yes, I understand that the 72 carb will not work well on the 68 engine.
But would I be better of with an more modern after market carb than the original 68?

In my opinion an after market carb is never better on a Cadillac

Agreed!  The original Quadrajet installed by Cadillac is a great "modern" carb.  It is as modern as you can get.  Get it rebuilt properly and there is no carb better for that application.

Are two well known and excellent rebuilders for all carbs including Quadrajets.  You can find more by Googling something like Quadrajet Rebuilder.

Being a somewhat more sophisticated, modern, carburetor you may be best served by having it professionally rebuilt unless you are talented with carburetors.  I would avoid letting your local mechanic rebuild it unless he is well familiar with them.  DO NOT listen to those that say the Quadrajets are too complicated and to "just put an Edlebrock on it".  Edlebrocks are little more than Carter AFBs that came along long before the Qjet.  The Qjet IS a modern carburetor used on most GM engines that had carburetors from the late '60s to 1990 or so.  The one on your car was specifically setup for the 472 engine.  Qjets are not that complicated, just different, and many do not understand them or care to.

Part of your decision is going to be based on which intake you use.   Both the 68 and 72 had the choke in the intake but I dont think they were the same so you will need all the correct parts to get it working correctly.

If mpg is important I dont think you can beat a properly set up and working Qjet.

I would stick with a Q jet but if I did not have the proper complete original I would find a good shop to properly build me a 75+  one with the electric choke.
