Hello Guys,
Can anyone tell me what this is and it's purpose.
Also at the bottom left of the pic there is a screw that has a ground lead attached, the other end is attached to the engine block behind the valve cover.
What is it actually grounding??
Thanks as always

He is referring to the Grounding Strap under the Rheostat.

Thanks Bill,
Looked at it many times but only just decided to find out what it is!!!
Bruce,
Having read my question again i didn't make it clear. I was asking about the rheostat as well as the ground cable.
Thanks to you both

Actually, the Grounding Strap is attached to the Firewall, and not the Rheostat, even though the Rheostat is attached to the Firewall.
So, it could be that the other end of the Grounding Strap could be attached to the Radio Antennae mast, or somewhere else in easy reach of it.

He says that the other end of the wire is attached to the engine. This is a necessary part of the electrical grounding circuit and is one of the ground straps that helps assure that the engine, the body, and the chassis are all properly grounded to the battery.

There is a tapped hole on the back side of each head and the ground straps attach there and the dash panel and blower blister.
The other thing is the heater blower resistor.

I believe those small braided straps are generally there for radio noise suppression. The one in the image may go to the antenna cable if I remember correctly.
